As summer approaches, join us for some afternoon tea and play a game of musical bingo in the Van Pelt Hall here in Our Lady of Hal Church. Tickets are £5 and will go on sale commencing this weekend and can be purchased after Saturday/Sunday Masses. Alternatively, tickets can be purchased from the office during the week from 10am - 2pm. Bingo cards can be bought on the day of, at the price of £1.50 per game.

We are delighted to announce that Our Lady of Hal is hosting another parish event before Lent begins: The 'Pie & Mash' Social Event! Tickets cost £7 for the Event, to include Pie & Mash, a Welcome Drink and the first game of Musical Bingo. A Bar will be available at subsidised prices and you will also have an opportunity to play a game of Tombola.

We are looking for Prize donations for a Tombola to take place at the Pie & Mash Social Event. We will be thankful for any of the following items: origins products, toiletries, bottles of wine/spirits, biscuit tins & chocolates, etc. Please leave items on the Event table at the back of the church after Sunday Masses or drop them off in the office during the week.

Please purchases your tickets after Sunday Masses or from the office during the week. Castle’s Pie & Mash Shop require numbers by Monday 2nd February, please purchase a ticket by Sunday 1st February or reserve a meal and pay by Wednesday 11th February.

Lamentation and Joy by The Alumni of New College Oxford Choir

Alumni of The Choir of New College Oxford will be performing a FREE concert in the church at 2:30pm. The ensemble will sing Tallis’ Lamentations of Jeremiah and other Renaissance Repertoire in the first half with easy listening Barbershop style music in the second half. Come and join us on Saturday afternoon to listen to the amazing choir!

Carol Service by Candlelight

Friday, 12th December at 7.15pm

We are delighted to announce that our Carol Service will take place on the 12th of December, Friday at 7.15pm here at Our Lady of Hal Church. There will be Congregational Carols, Solos and Ensembles led by the Hal Singers.

The Admission is free for all but there will be a voluntary collection that goes towards the Music Ministry of our Parish. There will be Mulled Wine and Mince Pies in the hall after the service so please do join us after. We are asking if people are able to bring Mince Pies; if you are able to, you can drop your Mince Pies after Saturday/Sunday Mass on the 6/7th December. Alternatively, you can drop in the parish office to do so during the week leading up to the Friday, 12th December. We greatly appreciate your efforts and generosity.

OLH ENSEMBLE (GUEST HAL SINGERS) AUDITIONS - (CLOSED)

Our Lady of Hal RC Church Camden is recruiting for the following voice types (STB) as Guest Hal Singers to increase our quartet to an octet as and when required across the year.

Ensemble Cantors : A very recent and generous donation from a parishioner has enabled us to form a quartet from our regular professional Solo Cantors who sing a monthly Solemn Mass (12.00 noon), with a separate rehearsal on a mutually convenient day/evening preceding the Mass. Moving forward, we intend for the Hal Singers to come together for Christmas, Holy Week, Easter and other liturgical and performance-based events, when we would like to increase the ensemble to an Octet. Paid ‘Away Days’ are under consideration to consolidate the plethora of repertoire required for major liturgical periods, and although ‘deps’ will understandably be required along the way, we would like to hear from singers who wish to develop a sense of ensemble as we embark on this relatively new journey. Thus far repertoire has included works by Haydn, Mozart, Vittoria, Darke, Bach, Baker and Palestrina and have more recently introduced a little Gregorian Chant to Mass. Fee £80 per rehearsal & £80 per Mass. Should Singers be required to cover for our regular monthly Quartet Masses, Hal Singers from this recruitment drive will have first refusal, likewise for our weekly Solo Cantor Masses. Currently we have approximately 8 dates of work available between December 2025 and March/April 2026 (Holy Week-Easter) with further dates added thereafter. Holy Saturday will be paid at a higher rate and possibly Maundy Thursday, should we decide to have music prior to Mass (tbc).

We would like to hear from classically trained singers both opera and choral singers, with a working knowledge of the main vocal languages in addition to Latin. We are a friendly, welcoming and warm set of professional musicians and desire the same in others. An ability to sight read or be ‘note ready’ prior to a rehearsal is essential - ‘Hal Singers’ Mass repertoire is sent out several weeks in advance. Experience of singing Catholic or Anglican Mass/Eucharist Service is desirable but not essential, with singers of any faith or none welcome to apply, although we ask that cantors conduct themselves respectfully whilst in church, sympathetic to catholic liturgy and congregations, whilst willing to kneel, stand and utter responses when required.

Auditions will be held on the following dates in November:

Friday 7th November 10.00-11.30 & 14.00-18.00

Saturday 8th November: 10.30 – 16.00

To be considered for an audition, please send a CV/Bio, and recording (desirable not essential) to the Music Director at camdenmusicdirector@rcdow.org.uk specifying which date you would like to be heard.

Audition Requirements: A religious based classical aria from an Oratorio, Mass Setting, Cantata or Requiem or a stand-alone classical religious song. Repertoire should be reflective in musical character; please use the following composers as a guide when selecting audition repertoire: Handel, Vivaldi, Pergolesi, Gluck, Haydn, Mozart. Etc. Please also prepare two Mass related pieces that will be sent to you in advance of the audition.

Immerse - A night of encounter!

Come and join us on the 6th of December from 5.15pm for the upcoming Joel’s Bar evening - Immerse, here at Our Lady of Hal. This is a time for young adults to meet together, be refreshed with the Holy Spirit through worship and prayer ministry and to build community with one another. There will be Mass beforehand and then a talk from an incredible speaker, before some mulled wine and social time! All are welcome so bring a friend, and if not then just bring yourself!! We’ll be diving into the hope that we have in Jesus, who is a sure anchor for the soul, and why the message of Christmas is needed now more than ever!

'Taste of the World' Potluck Event

Following our successful Bingo Night in June, many people have recently been asking about future parish social events. Although we are currently planning events for the Christmastide in December, we would like to take a moment to celebrate the rich diversity of our parish by coming together for an evening of international culinary delights!

For this even to be successful, we are asking people to volunteer in bringing either: a main dish, side dish or dessert that is special to your cultural backgrounds and ethnic origins. Sign up sheets will be available after Saturday/Sunday Masses on the table at the back of the church. Alternatively, you can contact Carl via email or in person during the week. If you are unable to bring a dish, don't worry about it. Your presence is what's most important to us!

Tickets are £5 and are on sale after Saturday/Sunday Masses. All the proceeds from the ticket and bar sales will go towards the church maintenance fund. We hope to see you there!

Confirmation 2026

We hope to run a Confirmation Programme provided there are sufficient candidates. Confirmation, together with Baptism and the Eucharist, completes our initiation into the Church. In this sacrament, we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit to help us live as adult Christians. Young people are normally confirmed in Year 9 or above. Older candidates may be invited to prepare through the RCIA programme.

Requirements:

1. A Baptism certificate (if not baptised at Our Lady of Hal)

2. Regular Sunday Mass attendance.

3. Commitment to attend all preparation sessions

4. Choosing a saint’s name for Confirmation .

5. A practising Catholic sponsor (aged 16+, not a parent).

The Confirmation Mass is usually celebrated by the Bishop during the Easter season. If you wish to apply, the candidate is to e-mail the parish priest: markdunglinson@rcdow.org.uk (copying in your parent or guardian) and explain why you wish to be confirmed.

The Programme begins in December.

FHC is one of the most joyful milestones in a Catholic child’s life. In the Eucharist, we receive not ordinary food, but Christ Himself—His Body and Blood. Children normally make their FHC in Year 3, provided they are baptised and able to understand the sacredness of what they are receiving. As part of the preparation programme, they will also make their First Confession learning about God’s forgiveness and mercy. If your child is due to make their First Communion next year—or if you are an older child, teenager, or adult who has not yet received the sacrament—please get in touch. Thank You, dear Parishioners, for your warm and kindly welcome to the parish. It is good to be here in such a lively community. It will take some time for me to settle and begin to work with you more effectively.

Please continue to be patient with me in the days and weeks ahead.

There are many things that we will need to do together to live out our individual vocations and to celebrate the Good News of Jesus Christ here in our community and "out there" in the world.

I will not be able to do this alone and I will need your help.

We will need musicians to help us celebrate Holy Mass more worthily, and Eucharistic Ministers to visit the sick and housebound, to name but two ministries.

I will be talking to you about these ministries, and others, in the weeks to come. We also have plenty to look forward to: our First Holy Communion, Confirmation and RCIA Programmes will soon be starting.

Please continue to be careful about keeping one another safe from Covid.

I would suggest that you keep wearing your masks, unless exempt, and observing social distancing where possible.

If you feel able, please continue to receive Holy Communion in the hand out of charity for your fellow parishioners.

Of course, it is now 'permitted' to receive Holy Communion on the tongue but the priest (or minister) must sanitise their hands if contact is made with saliva. This is to protect the next person receiving Holy Communion.

TOWARDS THE SYNOD IN OCTOBER 2024 – Let us ask the Holy Spirit to guide us in this process. Come Holy Spirit! As you know there will be a synod of the whole Church in Rome in October 2024.

‘The Lord will guide us and help us to be a more synodal & missionary Church, a Church that adores God & serves the women and men of our time, going forth to bring everyone the consoling joy of the Gospel’ (Pope Francis). ‘Each Christian is a mission on this earth’ and we all have a responsibility to proclaim Christ, not just religious, deacons, priests and bishops. YOUR opinion counts and there will be an opportunity to put your ideas forward. This Sunday a questionnaire is available for you to take home and return completed BY 3RD MARCH. Additionally, at the Sunday Masses on 2nd/3rd March the questionnaire will be handed out again and, during the homily slot, you will be able to write down your ideas. The form will not record your name, it will be anonymous. To start you thinking these will be the questions: Q1: How do we witness as a Parish and proclaim our faith to: a) those who have never heard of Christ? b) those who ceased walking with Christ? c) those with whom we worship Christ (go to church)? Q2: How should we organize ourselves as a parish to do this more effectively? Q3: What concrete steps/formation opportunities would help us begin to witness and proclaim our faith more effectively? Q4: What structures may need to change the way we are organized currently? You are invited to take this opportunity and all the ideas received will be collated and sent to our diocese, and eventually to Rome

One Hope Project is an inspirational band which will lead us in music and prayer centred around Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Our Church will be 90 on the 18th March 2023

18 ^th March marks the 90 ^th anniversary of the opening and blessing of Our Lady of Hal Church.

Because the date falls in Lent, it has been decided to celebrate our 90 years jointly with the

celebrations for the King’s Coronation in May. This means we will have a special Mass on Sunday

7 ^th May followed by a parish lunch similar to the one we had for the late Queen’s Jubilee last year.

Further details will be available nearer the time. Please keep the 7 ^th May free in your diaries.

Our parish held three sessions for the Synod on these topics:

1. COVID-19 in relation to the church community 2. Our wider journey, recalling our experience of the pandemic, sharing our joy, pain, and sorrow. 3. Our church community: who is part of it and who is missing? 4. Our mission. Does the parish live our mission? What are we neglecting?

The feast of Pentecost, the birthday of the Church, falls this year on the 5th of June which coincides with the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations. We are having a parish party on Sunday 5th June following the 12 Noon Mass. Please come along as this will be a lovely opportunity to socialise together after such a long time. Returning to Mass at Pentecost

A beautiful hallmark of the Catholic faith is the profound desire to participate in the Holy Mass and share in the Eucharist. We do so with deep gratitude and joy. The Eucharist gives the Church her identity - “The Eucharist makes the Church, and the Church makes the Eucharist.” It enables us to worship Almighty God, to support each other on our journey of faith, and to be a visible sign of faith in the world. This hallmark is supported and strengthened by the precept that our fundamental Christian duty is to worship God by participating in the celebration of Mass. Attending Mass on Sundays and Holy Days is the greatest of all privileges, sometimes referred to as “the Sunday Obligation.”

Since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, until the present time, we have shared with you our judgment that the situation of the last two years has meant that the Sunday Obligation has been impeded and has needed to be fulfilled in other ways. We thank God that this situation has now changed. The pressing challenges of the pandemic have lessened significantly. Most people have resumed the wide range of normal activities, no longer restricted by the previous Covid measures. We therefore believe that the reasons which have prevented Catholics from attending Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation no longer apply.

We understand there will still be some members of our congregations who, for reasons of health, do not feel safe enough to return to Mass. It has always been the understanding of the Church that when the freedom of any Catholic to attend Mass in person is impeded for a serious reason, because of situations such as ill health, care for the sick or legitimate fear, this is not a breach of the Sunday Obligation.

Our Catholic people and parishes have benefitted during these difficult times from the online streaming of Mass and other services. “Virtual viewing” of Mass online does not fulfil the Sunday Obligation. It may, however, be a source of continual spiritual comfort to those who cannot attend Mass in person, for example those who are elderly and sick, for whom the obligation does not apply. In this context, we recognise gratefully the ministry of those who administer Holy Communion to the elderly, sick and housebound.

We are grateful to our clergy, religious and lay faithful who have served our parishes, schools and communities with dedication and distinction throughout this pandemic. Now we look forward with renewed faith and confidence.

In the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the Lord’s Supper, the Lord Jesus entrusted to us the precious gift of Himself. With humility, we glory in being a Eucharistic people for whom attendance at Mass is essential. Looking forward to the forthcoming feast of Pentecost, we now invite all Catholics who have not yet done so to return to attending Mass in person.

As the Church needs the witness of the presence of each person, so too each believer needs to journey in faith and worship with their fellow disciples. Nourished by our encounter with the Risen Lord Jesus, fed with His Word and His Body and Blood in Holy Communion, and supported by the presence of each other, we receive strength week by week, to serve the Lord and glorify Him with our lives. Our parish held three sessions for the Synod on these topics:

1. COVID-19 in relation to the church community 2. Our wider journey, recalling our experience of the pandemic, sharing our joy, pain, and sorrow. 3. Our church community: who is part of it and who is missing? 4. Our mission. Does the parish live our mission? What are we neglecting?
