Our Lady of Hal Cantor Auditions
Our Lady of Hal RC Church Camden is recruiting all voice types (SATB) for the following: Solo Singers on rotation, Ensemble Singers & Singers to deputise when required:
Solo Cantors: 10am & 12.00 noon Masses most weeks, leading congregations in responsorial Mass settings, hymns, a psalm and a solo communion piece. Fee: £70 per Mass (fee to be reviewed in January 2026). An initial paid rehearsal will be offered to learn/consolidate the structure of Mass and our current Mass Setting, prior to being added to the rota; thereafter, the responsibility for learning weekly hymns, a psalm, a communion piece and any change in Mass Setting (approx. twice a year), falls to the singer. Singers must have the vocal stamina to sing both Masses, with a rehearsal followed by break preceding each Mass.
Ensemble Cantors: A very recent and generous donation from a parishioner has enabled us to form a quartet from our Solo Cantors and guest singers. The Hal Singers sing a monthly Solemn Mass (12.00 noon) with a separate rehearsal on a day preceding the Mass. The Hal Singers also come together for Christmas, Holy Week, Easter and other liturgical and performance-based events, with ‘Away Days’ being considered to consolidate the plethora of repertoire required for major liturgical periods. And although ‘deps’ will understandably be required along the way, we would like to hear from singers who wish to develop a sense of ensemble as we embark on this relatively new journey. Until now we have sung repertoire by Haydn, Mozart, Vittoria, Darke, Bach, Baker and Palestrina and have more recently introduced a little Gregorian Chant at Mass. Fee £80 per rehearsal & £80 per Mass
We are wanting to hear from classically trained professional singers including opera and choral singers, with a working knowledge of the main vocal languages in addition to Latin. We are a friendly and warm set of professional musicians and desire the same in others. An ability to sight read or be ‘note ready’ prior to a rehearsal is essential - ‘Hal Singers’ Mass repertoire is sent out several weeks in advance. Repertoire for Solo Cantor Masses is sent out on a Monday prior to Sunday Masses. Experience of singing Catholic or Anglican Mass/Eucharist Services is desirable but not essential, with singers of any faith or none welcome to apply, although we ask that cantors conduct themselves respectfully whilst in church, sympathetic to Catholic liturgy and congregations, whilst willing to kneel, stand and utter responses when required.
Auditions will be held on the following dates in October:
Friday 17th: 09.30-11am, 1pm-6pm.
Saturday 18th: 11am – 6pm
Monday 20th: 09.30-11am, 1pm-6pm.
To be considered for an audition, please send a CV/Bio, and recording (desirable not essential) to the Music Director at camdenmusicdirector@rcdow.org.uk specifying a date and block of time in which you are available to attend. Singers may wish to audition for all available work, either solo or ensemble Masses, or to be placed on the ‘deps’ list. Please specify at your audition.
Audition Requirements: A religious based classical aria from an Oratorio, Mass Setting, Cantata or Requiem or a stand-alone classical religious song. Repertoire should be reflective in musical character; please use the following composers as a guide when selecting audition repertoire: Handel, Vivaldi, Pergolesi, Gluck, Haydn, Mozart. Etc. Please also prepare two Mass related pieces that will be sent to you in advance of the audition.
We look forward to hearing from you.
